Woodland Walks in North Wales

Llyn Mair

Tucked away, surrounded by beautiful woodland, and only a 15/20 minute drive away from Garreg Goch Caravan Park lies Llyn Mair.  A beautiful lake hidden in the Vale of Ffestiniog, located between Maentwrog and Rhyd.  Llyn Mair is said to have been created by the Victorian slate baron, W. E. Oakley, as a birthday gift for his daughter, Mair.  The woodland that surrounds this lake comprises much of Coedydd Maentwrog, a designated Special Area of Conservation.

The Coed Llyn Mair nature reserve makes up the largest section of the Coedydd Maentwrog, stretching from Llyn Mair up to and around the Ffestiniog Railway's station at Tan -y - Bawlch.

Llyn Mair is home to a wealth of wildlife and insects including Herons, Ospreys, Damselfly and Dragonfly.  During the summer months the water lilies are a sight to behold!

You can while away the day sitting on one of the many benches situated all around the lake.  Why not take a picnic with you, as there are several picnic benches too, and enjoy the peace and quiet whilst having a bite to eat!

There are several trails for you to follow.  You can follow the trail around the lake, winding through the woodland, bringing you to the edge of the lake.  If you follow this all the way around, you will eventually come to a little waterfall by a lovely little cottage.  This brings you back onto the road, where you can walk back around to the car park; unless you walk back through the trees to where you started from!

There are clearly marked footpaths all through the woodland.  The Coed Llyn Mair nature trail runs for around 400 meters and ascends quite steeply over a series of steps that lead to Tan y Bwlch train station.

Llyn Mair is just one of many beautiful locations within close proximity to us here at Garreg Goch Caravan Park, Porthmadog, that provide scenic walks for all abilities.

If you are a lover of walks, or simply just like to be close to nature, we are the ideal base for your next holiday.  After a day out walking, why not head back to your rented holiday home, or your own touring caravan/motorhome, have a nice relaxing shower and put your feet up whilst enjoying a lovely homemade cake from Henllan Bakery and a tipple or two from the local brewery in Porthmadog (soon to be stocked in our on-site shop!)
